Psychologist Referral Process and Fees

Pathways To a Healthier Mind

Accessing mental health services through Medicare is a crucial aspect of ensuring comprehensive healthcare coverage for individuals in need of mental health support. Read on to learn about our psychologist and psychologist referral process and associated fees.

Medicare system facilitates diverse channels of referral pathways to psychologists and psychiatrists. Primary care physicians often serve as initial entry points, providing direct referrals based on assessments. Mental health professionals may refer patients between disciplines, with psychologists focusing on therapeutic interventions and psychiatrists on medication management.

In acute situations, urgent referrals through emergency services or crisis hot lines ensure timely intervention. Collaborative efforts between healthcare providers, community resources, and individuals contribute to a comprehensive system, fostering accessible pathways for those seeking psychological or psychiatric support.

In addition to the mainstream Medicare pathway, as a NDIS registered practice, psychologists of Takes Care Specialist centre can see NDIS participants, who suffer from a psychosocial disability.

Mental Health Care Plan

A Mental Health Care Plan, issued by a general practitioner or psychiatrist, entitles individuals to up to 20 subsidised psychology sessions each year. This plan significantly reduces out-of-pocket costs, making psychological support more financially accessible. It ensures comprehensive mental health care, allowing individuals to address their needs through structured sessions while benefiting from financial assistance under the plan.

Furthermore, a Mental Health Care Plan provide an essential opportunity for your GP to explain (i) why you are referred to a psychiatrist or psychologist, respectively, (ii) important background information and (iii) list of your medications.

NDIS Participants

As a part of our referral enquiry, Takes Care Specialist Centre referral seeks information about the goals of each participant, prior to creating the Service Agreement.

Beginning from the initial appointment, your psychologist or counsellor provides his/her best endeavour to NDIS participants to understand the goals of each participant and their barriers to lead a fulfilling life.

Using this understanding, together with forming alliances with the loved ones of each participant, the psychologist or the counsellor would then plan the required sessions and activities, so that each participant can travel towards their goals.

In each case, together with the NDIS participant and their loved ones, the psychologist or the counsellor would revise the plan to ensure that it stays current and suited to the need of the participant.

Private Health Insurance

Opting to see a psychologist without a Mental Health Care Plan in Australia includes using private health insurance. Health insurance may cover a portion of the costs, reducing out-of-pocket expenses. This option provides flexibility in choosing psychologists and tailoring mental health support according to individual preferences and coverage within the insurance plan.
